The Virginia Rider Training program Basic RiderCourse (BRC) coaches the fundamental skills and is NOT intended to produce the superb riding skills of an experienced rider; rather, it provides the basic ENTRY-LEVEL skills for a new rider to begin practicing and developing the mental and motor skills important for safe street operation.
We do not guarantee your successful completion or safety, ONLY YOU can provide that.
The typical 15+ hour course of instruction takes the beginning rider through the basics of scooter or motorcycle operation, effective braking, turning skills and obstacle avoidance, as well as safe riding strategies. The course consists of 4 or 5 hours of classroom instruction and several hours of actual hands on training.
Upon successful completion A MSF completion card & a Virginia DMV Completion Certificate/30 day temporary motorcycle license waiver are issued. The Virginia DMV Completion Certificate/waiver will waive BOTH the knowledge & skills test at any Va. DMV for one year from the date issued. It will also grant the student ( 19 years of age or older) a 30 day temporary class "M" license to drive a motorcycle from the date of completion. The Virginia DMV Completion Certificate (waiver) will be good for one year for the purpose of waiving the knowledge and skills test as well as the 30 day motorcycle learner's permit holding period. Students under 19 years of age will still be required to wait the nine months and will not have a 30 day class "M" temporary license. The Virginia DMV Completion Certificate (waiver) is accepted at Virginia DMV offices only. Other states may not accept Virginia's MSF card. No other state will accept the Virginia Completion Certificate.
You do not need a learner's permit or a motorcycle drivers license to take the Jump Start or Basic RiderCourse. Don't make two trips to DMV.
In the time we have allotted, we cannot guarantee that everyone will learn to ride a motorcycle and/or successfully pass this course.
IF YOU HAVE NOT RIDDEN A BICYCLE RECENTLY, YOU MAY BE UNABLE TO PASS THE BASIC RIDERCOURSE (BRC). EYES, BOTH HANDS AND BOTH FEET ARE USED TO OPERATE THE MOTORCYCLE AT THE SAME TIME.
Coordination & balance are essential!
INJURY OR DEATH CAN OCCURE WHEN OPERATING A MOTORCYCLE. You and you alone are responsible for your safety. Good balance & motor skills are a few skills needed to take this course.
Motorcycle training is physically and mentally demanding.
